Chianti Classico is one of the most famous Italian wine-growing regions as well as a premier travel destination. This classic Chianti tour from Florence runs Monday to Saturday, all year except January, with at least 2 participants.
The Chianti Classico area lies between Florence and Siena, within easy reach of the Renaissance capital. Breathtaking views abound at every turn: rolling hills with manicured vineyards and olive groves, noble castles, picturesque villages and ancient wineries large and small dot the landscape. In the spring, purple irises embellish the fields, replaced by bright red poppies later in the season.
The Chianti Classico blend includes between 80% and 100% of Sangiovese grapes. The remaining 20% can be Canaiolo, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Chianti Classico DOCG must be aged for at least 11 months and have a minimum alcoholic strength of 12°. Chianti Classico has a brilliant ruby color, tending to garnet. The taste is dry at first, and becomes softer with time.
The alcohol content rises to 12.5° for the Reserve, which requires a minimum aging of 24 months, including at least 3 bottling refinements. Compared with Chianti Classico, the Riserva is a nobler wine, with a higher finesse, longer odor, cleaner taste and velvety structure.
Chianti wines perfectly compliment the classic foods of the area such steak, red meats roasts, game, and strong cheeses.
This tour is designed for red wine lovers and takes participants on a discovery tour of two special cellars: the first one is a small organic family business which produces small quantities but high quality, the second one is a high rated cellar which is present in the leading international wine guides.
Lunch is also hosted by a small family-run winery, where you will sample typical Tuscan dishes such as bruschetta, various types of pasta or vegetable soup, meats and local cheese.
Visit three different Chianti Classico wine producers and sample their world-class red wines. Chianti is also the land of extra virgin olive oil, so as a bonus treat you will enjoy an olive oil tasting session run by an expert and gain an understanding of what makes a top-quality Extra Virgin.
